Scientific rationale The IFAS8 school will bring together students from different horizons, expose them to high-level specialized lectures, and propose them to carry-on a six-days research project. The primary subject of the present school is IFU: 3D spectroscopy. The voxels and the spaxels, are the elements that compose the data-cubes of integral-field spectroscopy. The topics ranges from the observational, data-reduction techniques, data analysis and modelling. The school is open to students at doctoral and post-doctoral levels, and to highly skilled and motivated master students, without geographic restrictions. IFAS8 is the eighth edition of a series co-organized by Lyon (LIO, CRAL CNRS UMR5574, UCBL1) and IUCAA in Pune. The first, third and fifth editions were held in 2015, 2017, and 2019 in Pune on observational astronomy, and the other in Lyon. In 2016 on modeling and simulations in astrophysics, and in 2018 and 2020 on 3D spectroscopy. These schools hosted participants from fourteen different nationalities. The Centre de Recherche Astrophysique de Lyon (CRAL) has been a pioneer or 3D, or Intergral field spectroscopy, and recently assembled the MUSE spectrograph now in operation at the ESO's VLT. This is one of the largest and most advanced IFU spectrograph, and it opened the era of spectroscopic blind surveys, where, rather than targeting pre-selected sources, entire new classes of objects can be discovered out of deep fields. IUCAA is coordinating major efforts to develop theoretical and observational astronomy in India, including spatial astronomy, international projects, like the TMT, and gravitational waves, LIGO-India. IFAS8 will give introduction and practical experience on the cutting-edge spectroscopic methods. Lectures will be given during the morning sessions, and research projects will be proposed to the participants, in small groups supported by a tutor. The school will be concluded by a presentation of the results of these projects. Registration, support and deadlineThe registration is open now. Deadline: Aug 27th 2023. Early applications are an advantage if a grant is requested. The registration fees of 3000 INR include the full board accommodation and to be paid once selected. The school can offer a travel grant and/or a discounted rate to those justifying it and subject to availability of funds. The registration process is the following:
Recommendations: The school will be over-subscribed by a factor two-to-three. The selection process will start after Aug 27, 2023, and postponing the registration to close to the deadline may reduce the chances to be accepted. The applicants (if student) should request their professor/PhD advisor to send a support letter by email to ifas8 at sciencesconf.org by the deadline. Organizing committee Board of Directors: Kanak Saha (IUCAA), and Jens-Kristian Krogagger (CRAL) Counsellors: *P. Prugniel (CRAL), R. Gupta (IUCAA), H.P. Singh (Delhi University).
Local Organization:Kanak Saha (IUCAA) Email(if any query): /data/sc/production/ifas8 at sciencesconf.org Sponsors:The organization of the school would not have been possible without the financial support of the LABEX Lyon Institute of Origins (ANR-10-LABX-0066) of the Université de Lyon within the program "Investissements d'Avenir" (ANR-11-IDEX-0007) of the French government operated by the National Research Agency (ANR). |
